Glass Ceiling Award

The Glass Ceiling is awarded to a woman in our community who has broken through the traditional barriers to obtain success. The recipient is either the “first” or one of a few women among men at her level or in her field. The recipient is someone who has provided a tangible role model for all of us.

Nominations are made by Kalamazoo Netwok members and the form is available on the members only page.

Lori Moore
2008 Recipient

Lori Moore is this year’s Glass Ceiling Award winner. The recipient is traditionally the first, or one of a very few women among many men, at her level or in her field. The award is in recognition of the efforts to break through gender barriers on the path to success.

This year’s recipient, Lori Moore, morning host of WKZO news/talk radio, is the first female morning host in the history of the station and the only female host on any Fairfield station. While at WKMI, from 1981-1993, Lori became the first female morning drive-time host, a position only held by men. At that time, she was told, “Even women prefer to hear a man’s voice on the radio”. Lori has been instrumental, especially in the early years, for changing attitudes and marketing direction within her industry. She was co-creator of the Do-Dah Parade, which directly replaced the stations sponsorship of the “Miss Skimpy Bathing Suit Contest”. At one time, her show was replaced by Don Imus, but only for a short time, as ratings dropped, and the station brought her back, by popular demand. Arbitron has rated Lori’s show the #1 show in the Kalamazoo market, for audiences over age 35, since 1995.

Lori graduated with a BA, Cum Laude, from Hope College, in 1981, and was awarded an internship at WNEW-TV5, in New York City. While there, she completed a fine arts immersion semester, at the GLCA Arts Program. She decided she liked radio more than TV, and started with WKMI Radio. In 1995 she started with WKZO. Her career has given her the exposure and opportunity to bring attention to many charitable causes that are near and dear to her heart. Lori has thousands of volunteer hours in community service for Kalamazoo non-profits, and received the 2005 Merit Award for Community Involvement for Tsunami, Katrina and holiday fundraisers. Lori is the Spokesmodel / Creative Director of bilingual radio/tv advertising Harbor Advertising. Her fundraising efforts have earned her the Michigan Association of Broadcasters 2006 & 2007 “Broadcaster of the Year for Community Involvement”, and Gov. Granholm declared Nov. 16, 2006 “Lori Moore Day” to commemorate her 25 years in radio and service to the community.
